The Tacoma Branch of The Mountaineers greatly benefits from the thousands of hours all of our fantastic volunteers put in each year. Even with our dedicated group of volunteers there are always more things to do. Below are several opportunities to jump in and contribute to our branch.
If you don't see a specific need you are interested in, contact the Branch Chair to find out about additional areas that can use a helping hand.
Conservation Opportunities: The Mountaineers Tacoma Branch is looking for volunteers to coordinate trail maintenance projects on behalf of the Tacoma Branch. In the meantime sign up for a trail maintenance project with Washington Trails Association (WTA) who have work parties weekly. Go to www.wta.org to sign up for a trail maintenance project.
Third Friday Meeting Greeters and Hosts: Join us at the clubhouse to welcome new and prospective members at our 3rd Friday branch meetings. The member information meetings are held most months (January through June, September and November), starting at 7 p.m. and followed by a program of more general interest at 8 p.m. We can never have too many enthusiastic members on hand to answer questions about the different activities and to let others know how much fun we have!
MOFA, our Mountaineering Oriented First Aid Course, is always in need of volunteers to play the part of victims. Wear old clothes and play act your way through a series of traumas to challenge the students in the course. It's a race to see if they will correctly diagnose and treat your injuries before the clock runs out. Contact the MOFA Chair to find out when the next call for volunteer victims will be.
Branch Publicity Opportunity & Fundraiser: If you've ever been hiking on a trail you are amply qualified to give us a hand with our on-going Branch publicity program, the popular "Hike of the Week" feature in the News Tribune Adventure Sections every Friday. Each column earns us $25 for the Hiking/Backpacking Committee and the Branch. Help us keep this effort going by writing up some of your favorite day hikes. All levels of hikes are needed, from easy family hikes to strenuous conditioners. Contact Amy Mann, agmann@comcast.net, 253-759-2796 for a list of hikes that have been submitted so far and for a copy of our easy-to-use fill-in form.
