Tacoma Branch | Tacoma Board
Geoff Lawrence
Tacoma Branch Chair
Geoff returned to the Pacific Northwest in 1996, after having lived near Seattle as a young child and falling in love with hiking, camping, walking on the beach, and generally enjoying the outdoors as a giant playground. After working for years in a career demanding a heavy travel schedule, Geoff moved to a more stationary job in Tacoma in 2003 and signed up for The Mountaineers Basic Climbing course to reconnect with the challenges and solitude of the mountains.
After completing the Basic Climbing course, Geoff is now an active participant (though not yet a graduate!) of Intermediate Climbing. Geoff has served on the Tacoma Mountaineers Basic Climbing committee, the Board of Trustees, and is now the Chair of the branch.

"I joined the Tacoma Mountaineers hoping to find some hiking partners. Instead I found an entire community of friendly people who are committed to enjoying and preserving the outdoors, and to helping others do the same. I soon branched into snowshoeing, scrambling, and more recently, Basic and now Intermediate climbing. For the past three years I served as Chair or Co-Chair for the Alpine Scrambling program and I have enjoyed teaching and leading scrambles."
Our Club has challenges to meet. As a new Board member, I will give my best efforts to the defined strategies that will help us meet them. I bring solid managerial skills to the table, but ultimately, it will be the collective power of our Mountaineers community that ensures our success.

I met my first Tacoma Mountaineers members in a social setting, shortly after moving to Tacoma from Seattle. I was struck instantly by their welcoming nature, and became a member soon afterward, while on a hike with them at Mount Baker.
I am a frequent bicycle commuter, love to garden, and enjoy hiking and social activities with my fellow Mountaineers. Having worked as an accountant in a variety of settings, it is my pleasure to bring my 20 years of experience to the group.

"While I discovered my love of the outdoors in my mid 20's, it wasn't until my move to the Pacific Northwest in 1985 and my joining the Mountaineers that it became a passion. I've climbed, done long-distance hiking, bicycling, canoeing...well, the list goes on. Ultimately it's about spending time in wild places, be it in the mountains, desert, tundra, whatever this planet has to offer. Through my association with the Mountaineers I have developed the skills to travel in wilderness.
My work-life was spent doing product development, last with Cascade Designs (makers of the Thermarest and other products for outdoor users) here in Seattle. I'm currently self-employed as a contractor, specializing in seismic retrofitting of older homes, which allows me to spend more time doing what I really enjoy, spending time in wilderness."
