Special Open House and Speaker Series Featuring Fred Beckey

November 18, 7:00 PM

Important Notice

Due to high ticket demand for this event, the venue has been changed. The new venue is the Kilworth Memorial Chapel on the northern end of the University of Puget Sound (UPS) campus.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet Fred Beckey! The Mountaineers, Tacoma Branch will host its monthly Open House and Speaker Series at the University of Puget Sound campus on November 18th at 7:00 PM featuring the renowned climber, Fred Beckey.

In the words of Colin Haley, noted contemporary Northwest climber "Fred Beckey is the most accomplished climber of all time. The volume of climbing he has done, near and at the cutting edge, is leagues beyond anyone else. At an early age in the Cascades, Fred got on an express train of bold, difficult, adventurous and beautiful first ascents across North America, and the train hasn't stopped for 70 years."

Co-sponsored by University of Puget Sound (UPS) and Edgeworks Climbing Indoor Rock Gym, Fred will give a multimedia retrospective of his decades of climbing in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Additional speakers will add perspective to Fred's impact on the climbing community.

Beckey's accomplishments don't stop with his alpinist credentials, he is also an author of the classic three-part Cascade Alpine Guide published by The Mountaineers Books. Copies of all three volumes of the Cascade Alpine Guide will be available for sale, along with the additional Mountaineers Books publication Challenge of the North Cascades. Of course, Fred will be available to autograph copies of these volumes.

The term living legend is overused, but is certainly appropriate to Fred Beckey. Don't miss this opportunity to see, hear and meet our own Northwest legend. Admission for the event is $5.00 - tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets, at Edgeworks Climbing Indoor Rock Gym, and at the Wheelock Student Center on the UPS campus.

Tickes are $5, available through Brown Paper Tickets

Branch Open House and Bradley Vickers account of his Guinness World Record Row across the North-Atlantic - September 16, 7:00 PM

7 pm - Come see our great orientation show of the programs and courses offered by the Tacoma Mountaineers. We welcome new members, prospects and friends; bring the family to see what we do including hiking, climbing and scrambling, sea kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, first aid, navigation, avalanche training, and social and family activities. This will be a chance to visit with committee people in activities of interest to you.

8 pm - Bradley Vickers presents Guinness World Record Trans-Atlantic Rowing Adventure

Northwest adventure rower Bradley Vickers will share photos and lessons learned from being part of a 4-man crew that complete a 71-day Guinness World Record row across the North Atlantic from New York to England. This ocean crossing was made in a 29'x6' custom-built ocean rowboat. The team spent 18 months raising funds to outfit the boat and gain the open ocean and survival skills they would need to complete the crossing. On the ocean the crew rowed in a rotation of two rowers at the oars for two hours at a time, maintaining this schedule 24 hours a day. The only time they would take a break in the rotation was when they had to weather out a tropical storm or unfavorable seas. During these times all four rowers would take shelter in the 8'x5' cabin. On the North Atlantic there were encounters with container ships, British naval destroyers, Spanish fishing vessels, pods of dolphins, fin whales, lobster fishermen, sail boats and even an oceangoing kitten.

Bradley and his three other team-members are from the University of Puget Sound (UPS) class of 2005 where they rowed on the crew team. He is proud to call the Northwest home and has recently picked up the sport of sailing. Future ocean crossings will most likely involve the use of sails as opposed to oars.

Wilderness First Aid Courses Offered in October

The Wilderness First Aid Course is 16 hours and designed to provide elementary skills in remote care. Based on recommendations from the Wilderness Medical Society and evidence-based research, our curriculum focuses on making sound decisions regarding patient evacuation, as well as skills for extended care. The Wilderness First Aid courses are hands-on, experiential format providing students with the skills and confidence for making remote medical care decisions.

Wilderness First Aid is ideal for outdoor recreation enthusiasts, backpackers, climbers, scramblers, and wilderness travelers who either work or play away from definitive medical facilities and support.

Students will receive the Wilderness First Aid Student Handbook, from Remote Medical International and certification in Wilderness First Aid. The Wilderness First Aid Course fulfills all Tacoma/Seattle Mountaineers climbing/scrambling course first aid requirements and "MOFA refresher" requirements previously required under Mountain Oriented First Aid.

Wilderness First Aid - Starting October 1st. Sign-up

Contact Mark Hallman (253-756-7499) or Marty Babare (253-756-5576) for more information.

Sport Climbing Course Starting September 15th

The Sport Climbing Course is open to anyone who wishes to learn how to safely enjoy sport climbing, as well as those already accomplished as rock and gym climbers who wish to expand and round out their skills. There are no prerequisites for the class.

This is a perfect course for new members who have not yet taken a course but have an interest in rock climbing. Continuing students from scrambling or basic climbing courses are also encouraged to enroll, as are gym climbers who want to transition to setting up their own top-ropes and anchors while enjoying independent climbing on great sport routes.

Prospective and current intermediate climbing students are especially encouraged to take the course; learning to lead sport routes will help significantly with the learning process for leading the alpine rock routes that you will encounter in the intermediate course.

More information on the Sport Climbing page.
