2012 Snowshoe Course

The Tacoma Mountaineers' Snowshoe course teaches hikers and backpackers how to continue their passion into the snowy season, as well as introducing new Mountaineers - who also may be new to hiking - to the fun of winter hiking.

In 2012 we offer two identical courses:
  • Feb. 9 (lecture) and Feb. 25 (field trip)
  • Mar. 29 (lecture) and April 7 (field trip)
Each course is one Thursday evening lecture and an all-day Saturday field trip. Please set aside the entire day and evening Saturday in case our return is delayed.

The Lectures will be held at:

4011 Alameda Avenue
University Place

Field Trip Location is TBD depending on snow conditions as the field trip date approach.

What to Expect

Course modules include food and clothing for the winter environment, physical conditioning for cold-weather activity, snowshoeing equipment and technique, basic safety considerations for winter mountain travel. Graduation requires completing lecture and field trip plus one additional snowshoe outing.

Graduation entitles students to participate in any Tacoma Mountaineers Snowshoe outing rated as Easy, and any Moderate outings that don't require an ice ax. Tacoma graduates can also participate in similar outings with other branches.

This course is open to anyone in reasonably good health and physical condition. Potential students under age 18 should email the Snowshoe Secretary (below) to discuss age restrictions. No outdoor or snowshoe experience required, we'll start you from the ground up...

If you have snowshoes and poles - great! If not you may rent them from several sources, including REI Tacoma and REI Southcenter: approx. $22 for REI members, $42 + $100 deposit for non-members. Tukwila REI says they reserve up to a week in advance; REI lifetime membership is $20. Anyone learning of other snowshoe rental outlets please email Snowshoe Secretary, jim5car@yahoo.com, let him know so we may share that information.

Due to Tacoma Mountaineer Clubhouse reconstruction, the evening lecture location is TBD, will be emailed to all registrants. Field trip location to be determined based on weather and snow conditions.

Somewhere around the end of the season both Snowshoe courses may (depending on interest) coagulate for a dinner, graduation and imaginary awards presentation.

If you have any questions or comments please email BOTH Course Leader Katie (valkate@comcast.net) and Secretary Jim (jim5car@yahoo.com); one will get back to you shortly.
