Our philosophy is not to act as a guide service, but to train members to become safe, self sufficient, kayaking enthusiasts, and have lots of fun...
Sea Kayak Committee Meetings: The committee meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. This is where the brainstorming takes place as well as plenty of socializing. Come and join us as we plot and scheme new fun things to do. If you would like to be a part of this fun and would like to find out all about the benefits of becoming a valued volunteer on the committee or if you are just looking for a way to be involved, call Vern Brown: (360) 626-8348.
Trip Reservation: To participate in Mountaineer sponsored sea kayak trips you must be a graduate or continuing student of the Basic Sea Kayaking Course or have received equivalency. To sign up for paddles contact the leader listed in the trip write-up or via the online go guide. Please call the leader before 9 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Feel free to ask the trip leader any additional questions/concerns about the trip.
Equivalency: Mountaineers members who have significant kayak training and experience, yet have not completed a Mountaineers Sea Kayaking Course (offered in Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, and Kitsap) are encouraged to apply for equivalency. There is a $20 processing and evaluation fee. To apply for equivalency contact Peggy Gablehouse, 253-884-2987, gablehousep@aol.com, for an application form.
Sea Kayaking Web advantages: Some trips may not make it into the printed Go Guide. Keep up with all our activities by searching the on-line activities page
2012 Basic Sea Kayaking Course
The Mountaineers' once-a-year class is loaded with practical information, hands-on education, introduction to kayak gear, and an emphasis on paddling safety. Learn the basic paddling strokes, how to get back in your boat when you go over, basic trip planning & navigation, and how to recognize & avoid dangerous situations. No prior kayaking knowledge or experience is required to participate in the course.
The course consists of one classroom session, one pool session, two open water sessions and two kayak paddles. The classroom session will be held on April 7, 2012 from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm at the Gig Harbor Public Library, Meeting Room 1. The library is located at 4424, Point Fostick Dr NW, Gig Harbor. The pool session (including a swim test) will be held from 10:15 am - 4:30 pm on April 22 at the Peninsula High School pool in Gig Harbor. Lake sessions will be held from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on April 28 - 29 at American Lake in Tacoma. To graduate, students must attend all the above listed sessions and complete two club-sponsored student paddles of at least four hours duration by September 29, 2012.
You MUST contact Beth Owen at drbethowen@yahoo.com to register for this class. You will then receive a registration form to mail in, after which you will be contacted to review your equipment and receive permission to sign up for this class.
The course is $199 for Mountaineers and $249 for non-members.
Additional costs: While boats are provided at no extra cost for the pool session, students are required to provide single sea kayaks, or rent them, for both lake sessions (April 28 - 29). If students have their own sea kayaks, they must have deck lines, foot rests and floatation at both ends. They must also have a spray skirt, paddle, coast guard-approved PFD, paddle float and pump. The Kayak Academy will provide kayaks and gear for these day-long open water sessions at a rental cost of $75.00 for the weekend. Students will also be required to have a dry suit for the open water sessions. The Kayak Academy's rental cost for a dry suit, cap and a pair of booties for the weekend is $59.00.
A course manual and course syllabus will be emailed to you upon registration. For the two qualifying club-sponsored paddles, students will be responsible for providing their own gear and kayaks and for providing their own transportation to the trip put-in location. If you need to rent your kayak equipment for these two student paddles, we have rental paddles set up for May 12 (from Gig Harbor) and June 9 (from Allyn). Kayak Academy will deliver the kayaks, equipment and drysuits to the paddle site, as long as we have at least 6 students signed up and prepaid for each rental paddle (cost $100 per day for kayak/equipment/drysuit). If we don't have at least 6 students for each rental paddle, then the students will be responsible for renting the required equipment on their own.
